How to set up VLAN network for BRT series on ASUS BRT-AC828 VPN Wi-Fi Router?

Introduction

Virtual LAN(VLAN) is a logical LAN segment that is used to segregate a physical network into multiple virtual LAN network. This allows business enviroments to easily manage multiple networks without sacrificing security and restrict the broadcast domain size while reducing the chance of packet collision, and the VLAN network is required in business environment.

The following setting steps explain how to set up VLAN for dividing multiple networks within a company.

Divide network into different departments with VLAN.

Setting Procedure

1. Type router.asus.com or 192.168.1.1 on the address bar and login to the management web console.

2. Click VLAN from the Advanced Settings on the left column.

* If you’ve already changed default IP address , type the new IP address to login .

* Please use network tool “Device Discovery” if you forgot a new IP address.

3.  Enable VLAN

4.  Click Edit (Pen) icon to edit VLAN settings

*All ports and wireless SSIDs belonging to VLAN1 show as factory default. That’s a broadcast domain so it’s the same group of devices to be assigned to all the same VLAN ID.

*For subnet on default, it’s set to IP address and subnet by the part of LAN settings.

5. Create VLAN for administrator team. Delete all except for LAN1 to LAN4, and click OK.

6. Next, create a VLAN for sales division. Click “+” to add.

7.  Input VLAN information

VLAN ID: VLAN number

Priority:This setting is used for setting priority on network traffic. You can set it from 0 (Best effort) to 7(the highest)

Subnet:It shows IP address segment and default gateway IP address. If you have to set up detailed IP address, please click Edict (Pen) icon.

 

8. Click OK once the you complete setting.

※PVID(Port VLAN ID) assigns VLAN when it gets untagged frame to the port.  If it gets tagged frame, the system refers VLAN ID and decide VLAN destination. 

 

Tagged VLAN

Tagged VLAN means frames which belong to the same VLAN can be tagged with a VLAN ID , therefore, the virtual network can be built among multiple network switches via connecting trunk port of switch. To cascade multiple switch with the same VLAN network, you have to enable tagging on specified LAN interface.

On the following network topology, Port5 belongs to VLAN1 and VLAN2, transfer frame with tagged VLAN to another network appliance (ex. switch).

How to use web graphic user interface (GUI) to setup encryption for a ASUS wireless router? (WPA2-AES)

1. Connect your PC’s Ethernet port to the LAN port on the router using an Ethernet cable.

2. Launch your web browser, then type in 192.168.1.1 to login the web setting page.

3. Input the default user name “admin” and password “admin” on the login page.

4. Follow the instructions below to setup on the main page.

Step1: Click on “AP” figure on the central of the main page

Step2: Create your own SSID (Wireless name)

(After searching, you can find the available wireless router.)

Step3: Select 「WPA2-Personal」from「Security Level」drop-down menu

Step4: Select「AES」from「WPA Encryption」drop-down menu

Step5: You could set a password that must contain 8 characters at least (0~9, A~Z, a~z)

Step6: Click on「Apply」to save your settings.

How to setup Ethernet WAN mode in ASUS DSL-AC68U/R Wireless Router

For DSL-AC68U/R, it does not have a standalone Ethernet WAN port. Here we provide you a way to configure one of your LAN port as Ethernet WAN port.

 

Case A: Disable Dual WAN

In WAN – Dual WAN page, if you set Enable Dual WAN to OFF, you are in this case.

(1)Please set Primary WAN to Ethernet WAN and choose a proper LAN port which is not used currently. For example, I am using LAN port 3 so I choose LAN port 4. And please press Apply button, wait for the process done.

 

(2)Then go to WAN – Internet Connection page. Please set WAN Connection Type to Automatic IP (or PPPoE, etc.). If your ISP needs VLAN ID, please set 802.1Q. Enable field to Yes, fill with proper VLAN ID (e.g., 10) and 802.1P (e.g., 0). Finally, please remember to press Apply button. Now you can go to Network Map to check if you can get IP properly.

 

Case B: Enable Dual WAN

In WAN – Dual WAN page, if you set Enable Dual WAN to ON, you are in this case.

(1)Please set either Primary/ Secondary WAN to Ethernet WAN and choose a proper LAN port which is not used currently. For example, I am using LAN port 3 so I choose LAN port 4. And please press Apply button, wait for the process done.

 

(2)Then go to WAN – Internet Connection page. Please set WAN Type to Ethernet WAN firstly, and set WAN Connection Type to Automatic IP (or PPPoE, etc.). If your ISP needs VLAN ID, please set 802.1Q . How to adjust Antenna Output Power of RT-N56U

In setting page:
1. Clink on「Advanced Setting」

2. Clink on「Wireless」

3. Please input valid numbers from 0 to 100 in「Tx Power adjustment」 (Default: 100)

4. Clink on「Apply」

※ Note:The numbers of available adjustment range of antenna output power of RT-N56U are from 0 to 100 only and the default setting is 100% power.
The less number you set can save the electronic power, but comparatively reduce the range of the wireless signal of RT-N56U.

How to set up Virtual Server/ Port Forwarding on ASUS Wireless Router?

 


1. Router WAN IP address – This is the IP address provided by your ISP to access the Internet.  This WAN IP address will also be used to access the PC providing the service.  In this example, the Router WAN IP address is “123.123.123.123”.

2. Router LAN IP address – The default IP address of your ASUS router is “192.168.1.1”.

3. For personal use – This computer has been assigned a LAN IP address of “192.168.1.130” by the router.  This PC does not provide any network service.

4. Server LAN IP address – This PC is assigned a static LAN IP Address of “192.168.1.103”.

This is the server PC that provides network services to other clients on the Internet.  Port forwarding will be applied to this PC.

To set up Port Forwarding:

Launch a browser and access router settings by keying in LAN IP address or http://router.asus.com on the address bar.

Click “WAN” on the Advanced Settings menu on the left panel.

Click the “Virtual Server/Port Forwarding” tab.

To set up Port Forwarding for a FTP server:

Before setting up port forwarding for a FTP server, a PC on the Internet cannot connect to the FTP server.

Under the Basic Config section, select “FTP” from the “Famous Server List” item.  Input a port or port range for the FTP server and select the Local IP.

In this example, the Server LAN IP address is “192.168.1.103“.

Click on “Edit” and then click on “Apply“.

Note:  Do not use the port range 20:21 for an FTP server if the AiDisk service on the router has been enabled. 

 

The FTP server is now running using the following settings:
Host: 123.123.123.123
Port: 2021

Rules that only the IP address can be forwarded for the match port

For Source IP address, you can:

  • (a)   Leave it empty. Unspecified, that is, any source IP can.
  • (b)   Enter a specific IP address, such as “192.168.122.1”
  • (c)    Enter IP address within one subnet or the same IP pool, such as “192.168.123.*”, or “192.168.*.*” or “*.*.*.*”

To check if Port Forwarding has successfully been configured for a FTP server:

  1. Ensure that your FTP server is set up and running.
  2. You will need a PC outside your LAN but has Internet access (hereafter referred to as “Internet PC”).  This PC should not be connected to the ASUS router in any way.
  3. On the Internet PC, use the router’s WAN IP to access the FTP server using a FTP application or FTP browser.  If port forwarding has been successful, you should be able to access the files on the FTP server.

 

To set up port forwarding for a HTTP server:

Before setting up port forwarding for an HTTP server, a PC on the Internet cannot connect to your server/PC via HTTP.

Under the Basic Config section, select “HTTP” from the “Famous Server List” item.  Input a port or port range for the HTTP server and select the Local IP.

In this example, the Server LAN IP address is “192.168.1.103“.

Click on “Edit” and then click on “Apply“.

The HTTP server is now running using the following settings:
Host: 123.123.123.123
Port: 80

Source Target: Rules that only the IP address can be forwarded for the match port

  3. On the Internet PC, launch a web browser and key in the router’s WAN IP address on the address bar.  If port forwarding has been successful, you should be able to access the web page provided by the HTTP server.

**If you want to forward a port range, for example 10200:10300, to a PC which is using the same port range, enter the service name, port range, and local IP address, but leave the local port blank.
