Wireless or Wi-Fi technology is another way of connecting your computer to the network without using wires. Wi-Fi uses radio frequency to connect wirelessly, so you have the freedom to connect computers anywhere in your home or office network.

Why D-Link Wireless?

D-Link is the worldwide leader and award winning designer, developer, and manufacturer of networking products. D-Link delivers the performance you need at a price you can afford. D-Link has all the products you need to build your network.

D-Link DIR-655 products provide 14x faster and 6x farther range than 802.11g. In simple terms: a noticeably stronger connection at distance.

D-Link DIR-655 Wireless Settings:

Login the DIR-655 and Choose the Wireless Options：

Enable Wireless:

Check the box to enable the wireless function. If you do not want to use wireless, uncheck the box to disable all the wireless functions.

Schedule:

The schedule of time when the wireless settings rules will be enabled. The schedule may be set to Always, which will allow the particular service to always be enabled. You can create your own times in the Tools > Schedules section.

Wireless Network Name:

Service Set Identifier (SSID) is the name of your wireless network. Create a name using up to 32 characters. The SSID is case-sensitive.

Enable Auto Channel Scan:

The Auto Channel Scan setting can be selected to allow the DIR-655 to choose the channel with the least amount of interference.

Wireless Channel:

Indicates the channel setting for the DIR-655. By default the channel is set to 6. The Channel can be changed to fit the channel setting for an existing wireless network or to customize the wireless network. If you enable Auto Channel Scan, this option will be greyed out.

802.11 Mode:

Select one of the following:

802.11g Only – Select if all of your wireless clients are 802.11g.
802.11n Only – Select only if all of your wireless clients are 802.11n.
Mixed 802.11n and 802.11g – Select if you are using a mix of 802.11n and 11g wireless clients.

Channel Width:

Select the Channel Width:
Auto 20/40 – This is the default setting. Select if you are using both 802.11n and non-802.11n wireless devices.
20MHz – Select if you are not using any 802.11n wireless clients.
40MHz – Select if using only 802.11n wireless clients.

Transmission Rate:

Select the transmit rate. It is strongly suggested to select Best (Auto) for best performance.

Visibility Status:

Select Invisible if you do not want the SSID of your wireless network to be broadcasted by the DIR-655. If Invisible is selected, the SSID of the D-Link DIR-655 will not be seen by Site Survey utilities so your wireless clients will have to know the SSID of your DIR-655

A firewall protects your network from the outside world. The D-Link DIR-655 offers a firewall type functionality. The SPI feature helps prevent cyber attacks. Sometimes you may want a computer exposed to the outside world for certain types of applications. If you choose to expose a computer, you cam enable DMZ. DMZ is short for Demilitarized Zone. This option will expose the chosen computer completely to the outside world.

Enable SPI:

SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection, also known as dynamic packet filtering) helps to prevent cyber attacks by tracking more state per session. It validates that the traffic passing through the session conforms to the protocol.

NAT Endpoint Filtering:

Select one of the following for TCP and UDP ports:

Endpoint Independent – Any incoming traffic sent to an open port will be forwarded to the application that opened the port. The port will close if idle for 5 minutes.

Address Restricted – Incoming traffic must match the IP address of the outgoing connection.

Address + Port Restriction – Incoming traffic must match the IP address and port of the outgoing connection.

Enable DMZ Host:

If an application has trouble working from behind the D-Link router, you can expose one computer to the Internet and run the application on that computer.

Note: Placing a computer in the DMZ may expose that computer to a variety of security risks. Use of this option is only recommended as a last resort.

IP Address:

Specify the IP address of the computer on the LAN that you want to have unrestricted Internet communication. If this computer obtains it’s IP address automatically using DHCP, be sure to make a static reservation on the Basic > DHCP page so that the IP address of the DMZ machine does not change.

It is important to remember that if you have entered “Configure Mode” that you engage encryption so that WPS connected clients will have a safe secure connection.

Step 1: Log in to the D-Link DIR-655 routers User Interface. Steps for doing that can be found here.

Step 2: Once inside navigate to the Advanced Tab, then to the Wi-Fi Protected Setup section on the left side of the configuration page.

Many friends asked that my D-Link DIR-655 forgot the password, how changed to manage? Here tell you how to reset it back to factory default settings.

Notes:D-Link dir-655 default does not have the password, you can enter the username admin and password is blank to try again.

Step 1: With the unit on, place a paper clip into the hole on the back on the unit labeled Reset.

Step 2: Hold paper clip down for 10 seconds and release.

Note: Do not repower unit during this procedure.

Step 3: The unit will reboot on its own. Once the WLAN light stops blinking, the unit is reset.

Resetting the router does not reset the firmware to an earlier version. It will change all settings back to factory defaults.

You can set an administrative password on DIR-655 router?

Step 1: Open a web browser and enter the IP address of the router in the address bar (default is 192.168.0.1). Press Enter.

Step 2: Click the Tools tab and then click Admin to the left.

Step 3: To change the administrative password, enter a new password in the Admin Password section.

Step 4: Click Save Settings to save the settings.

By the way:If you have the European version of this router, this procedure may not work. Please consult the D-Link office near you. D-Link USA does not support the European version.

Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is a standard for easy and secure establishment of a wireless home network, created by the Wi-Fi Alliance and officially launched on January 8, 2007.

The goal of the WPS protocol is to simplify the process of configuring security on wireless networks, thus it was first named ‘Wi-Fi Simple Config’. The protocol is meant to allow home users who know little of wireless security and may be intimidated by the available security options to configure Wi-Fi Protected Access, which is supported by all Wi-Fi certified devices.

The standard achieves its goal by putting much emphasis into usability and security, and the concept is implemented through four usage models that enable a user to establish a home network.

Let’s take the D-Link DIR-655 wireless router as an example.

Unconfigured mode:

By default, after setting up your wireless device with WPS and Push Button Configuration (PBC), the only step you need to do is press the WPS button on the side of the router. You would not need to create a wireless network name (SSID) nor a security key.

Configured mode:

You would need to configure the following sections in your router, Wireless Network Settings and Wireless Security Mode. Both sections must be configured including a wireless security key. Save settings and Reboot.

Note: After configuring the DIR-655 Wireless Network Settings you will need to enter in a Personal Identification Number (PIN) that is generated from your wireless adapter in order to establish a proper connection between client and host.

Note: Make sure that your wireless security setting is set to being WPA instead of WEP.

Enabling WEP will disable the wireless N feature of your D-Link router. WPA encryption should be used by default as it is a stronger encryption than WEP. WEP encryption on DIR series routers should only be used if you have other devices that do not support WPA.

In the event that you must use WEP, these steps will fix the certificate error.

Step 1: Click on Start, then Control Panel

Step 2: Click on Network Connections

Step 3: Right-click the Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.

Step 4: Click the Wireless networks tab

Step 5: Select your wireless Network name under Preferred networks and click on Properties.
