This thing is great. I got it from VTech Industries for about $220 AUD. It is basically a mini GNU/Linux server with 2 giant hard drives in it. That price gets you a single 1TB drive and you can install your own drive in the other bay by removing the lid and dropping it in place. The unit, pictured below, is a bit taller and wider than three PC hard drives stacked together.

It comes with a reasonable web interface you can access over your LAN, but I installed the fun_plug hack on it by copying the files across the network and restarting the device – easy. That hack gets you SSH access, rsync, and a bunch of other Linuxy stuff.

We are storing our media and backups on it and it is basically perfect for that use-case. I now once again have a cron-and-rsync based regular backup of all of my servers in the USA, hooray! I’m also routing all SSH traffic to our ADSL router through to it so I can access the files on the device from outside our network if neccessary.

All in all I am very pleased with this purchase.

D-Link has announced two new consumer Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices, the DNS-320 and DNS-325. Both feature two bays for 3.5-inch hard drives for a total of up to 4TB of storage.

The DNS-320 has an 800MHz processor while the DNS-325 features a faster 1.2GHz processor plus additional software, including a photo gallery, an audio streamer, and a blogging application. The DNS-325 also has a more rugged housing and has a slightly smaller footprint.

Both the D-Link DNS-320 and DNS-325 support RAID, are DLNA-certified for connecing to other home media devices, and have AFP and Time Machine support. Farstone’s Total Recovery Pro Backup software is also included with both devices, supporting scheduled and incremental network backups.

Pricing and Availability

The D-Link DNS-320 and DNS-325 are available now in North America and are backed by a three-year warranty. The DNS-320 is $109.99 while the DNS-325 is $199.99; disk drives are not included.

D-Link will be launching a DNS-320-110 and DNS-325-110 preconfigured with a 1TB hard drive in May for $199.99 and $279.99, respectively.

January 24, 2011 — D-Link Australia & New Zealand, the end-to-end networking solutions provider for business and consumers, today introduced the next generation DNS-320 ShareCenter Pulse 2-Bay Network Attached Storage designed to enhance file sharing, secure data, and stream content to media players.

D-Link Ships Next Generation 2-Bay Network Storage(DNS-320)

The new D-Link DNS-320 incorporates a full complement of next-generation technology, including a fast Gigabit Ethernet connection and support for up to two internal 3.5-inch SATA hard drives* — installed by simply sliding them in with no tools or cables needed. Also included are a built-in FTP server for accessing files via the Internet, built-in UPnP AV media server for streaming digital content and RAID 1 technology for backing up and mirroring files.

“The ShareCenter Pulse offers an extremely powerful and flexible solution for storing and sharing digital media across a network or the Internet,” said Maurice Famularo, Marketing Director, D-Link Australia & New Zealand. “It addresses the growing market need to store and share an ever-increasing amount of data, while offering built-in protection to keep valuable data, photos, videos and other important files intact.”

The D-Link DNS-320 comes with D-Link’s Setup Wizard and Easy Search Utility, which allows users to locate the ShareCenter Pulse anywhere on the network. Once located, this utility can be used to map the hard drive(s) so they will appear in “My Computer” on their PC. Backup software is also included on the CD to facilitate back up of files from a computer to the ShareCenter Pulse manually, according to a schedule, or in real-time. Real-time backups provide a method of safeguarding against unforeseen data loss.

A convenient USB port on the front of the ShareCenter can be used to attach external USB storage drives, USB printers, or an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for monitoring.

For businesses and consumers interested in reducing their energy costs and helping to save the environment, D-Link Green products provide eco-friendly alternatives without compromising performance. The ShareCenter Pulse uses hard drive power management and Smart Fan speed control to reduce energy costs, minimise noise and prolong the lifespan of installed hard drives.

For more information, see D-Link’s websites at www.dlink.com.au  and www.dlink.co.nz.
