D-Link DIR-501 Wireless Router User Reviews

1.Good Buy

After a little trouble setting the router code (most likely my fault) the device has been working flawlessly from day one. Down load speed is terrific. I would get another ,if needed, without hesitation.

2.dlinkgo Router $ cheap

Actually the D-Link DIR-501 router works fine but only had it for about a month. This item is realiable enough and your money goes a long way. I am satisfied but I just hope it last and only time will tell. One thing about this I can tell you that the people you call to help you install are professionals and patient. I recommend any problems call technical support. Just be nice to the operators because I am telling its hard working with people that doesn’t know alot abou t computers. I am so thankful they resolve my problem.

Dual band performance with up to 300Mbps speed on each band. Dual Band means you can power multiple wireless devices, simultaneously, without sacrificing connectivity. It’s like having 2 high-performance Wi-Fi networks in your home.

The D-Link® Wireless N Dual Band Router (DIR-815) features simultaneous wireless bands with a faster wireless network than previous generation wireless G devices, enabling you to create a faster Wi-Fi network with superior home coverage. Connect the DIR-815 to a cable or DSL modem and provide high-speed Internet access to multiple computers, game consoles, and media players. Create a secure wireless network to share photos, files, music, printers, and more, from greater distances throughout your entire home or office. With D-Link’s award-winning QoS engine that prioritizes time-sensitive online traffic, this router enables smooth Internet phone calls (VoIP) and responsive gaming.

D-Link DHP-1320 User Reviews

The D-Link DHP-1320 PowerLine Router is the first all-in-one router we’ve seen, and it delivers for the most part. The router offered decent close-range wireless speed and worked well with most HomePlug AV adapters in our testing. It also has an USB port and a decent set of features that can be conveniently managed via its responsive and well-organized Web interface.

On the downside, the router doesn’t feature dual-band or support Gigabit Ethernet and comes with just three LAN ports, whereas most wireless routers have four. For the street price of around $85, however, it’s a good buy for a home that requires a flexible network and doesn’t have intensive networking needs.

The good: The D-Link DHP-1320 Wireless N PowerLine Router incorporates HomePlug AV power-line technology and works with other HomePlug AV-compliant power-line adapters. The router offers fast wireless throughput speed, long range, and IP6 support, and is easy to use.

The bad: The D-Link DHP-1320 has only three LAN ports and doesn’t support Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band wireless, or the 500Mbps power-line standard. The router’s range throughput could be better and it’s a little bulky.

The bottom line: Supporting Wireless-N and HomePlug AV, the D-Link DHP-1320 Wireless N PowerLine Router is an id
eal router for a home network that favors flexibility over performance. Its lack of support for Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band wireless, and the 500Mbps power-line standard, however, makes it less suitable for those who need to share or stream a large amount of data.

Description

The D-Link® Wireless N 8-Port Router (DIR-632) provides a better wireless signal for your network than previous-generation Wireless G* technology. Upgrading your home network to Wireless N provides an excellent solution for sharing an Internet connection and files such as video, music, photos, and documents. D-Link Wireless N products use Intelligent Antenna technology to transmit multiple streams of data which enables you to receive wireless signals in the farthest corners of your home.

Not only does the D-Link Wireless N technology extend your wireless range, it also works with previous-generation wireless devices. The DIR-632 also includes basic QoS (Quality of Service) Prioritization Technology that analyzes and separates multiple data streams based on sensitivity to delay, enabling multiple applications such as VoIP, Video, and Gaming to stream smoothly across your network.

Features

The key feature of the router is the large number of 100Mbps Ethernet ports. The router has eight of these which would typically be handy for a SoHo or a small internet café. For most home users, these many ports will be of little use. WiFi 802.11n capacbility should give it an edge over other routers as well. All of the usual features you find in a good router are available – QoS, web site and access filtering. There is also some emphasis on IPv6 in the advanced menus.

The USB port function at the rear of the router can be used to share data and it can also be used to connect to the internet using a 3G modem. There is also support for something called WCN which is something Microsoft deviced to make configuring wireless network simpler. This feature also needs a USB flash drive to function.

Design and Build Quality

One of the first things you notice about the DIR-632 is that it’s noticeably larger than most other WiFi routers. The reason for that are the 8 wired 100Mbps ports at the rear of the router. In terms of build quality, it’s a pretty lightweight router and a little flimsy at the bottom. The front face of the router has the activity indicators for each one of the wired ports clearly marked. There’s also an indicator for the USB port. Provision for wall mounts is present on the back of the router and there is space for two antennas.

Performance

The performance of a WiFi 802.11n router should be considerably better than standard 802.11g routers. We setup the router in the Tech2 Labs close to where the router was and tried copying two data sets of 2 GB each. There were two test zones that we used. The first test was performed in the same room as the router. The second test was done in the room adjoining the labs. During our test run, we saw speeds of sequential data in the first zone peaking at 5.52MB/s, which is roughly the same theoretical speed of WiFi 802.11g (54Mbps). The assorted data set took a little longer with an average speed of 4.64MB/s. In the second zone, sequential data sets averaged 4.13MB/s and the assorted data folder 3.63MB/s.

User Reviews

“So far, so good.” by griffin2811

Pros: Great range, signal strength and stability. 8 ports and energy saving features.Interface for setup is clear, has many useful features my D-Link di524 didn’t. So far, no signal drops. Reserve I.P’s and has a central shareport, two things I wanted.

Cons: 60 seconds for this router to save changes every time you make one, but should only be one time during the setup.

Summary: I like it. I wasn’t able to read many reviews before I bought, but am pretty happy with this router.

Price

$80-90

DPG-1200 Reviews:

1.”As an IT Professional, I like this product.” by dapresley

Pros: I do not have cable and use the product to watch streaming video over the Internet. With my high speed connection, the performance is consistent enough for me. I own 2 DPG-1200 devices.

Cons: It is not compatible with Windows 7. I phoned tech support and was told that they are working on bringing it up to this level.

Summary: If you are a technical person with a high speed Internet connection, this product works as advertised. It is also a bargain for the price. Fry’s Electronics sells it for $99. I read the other reviews, which are very negative. The installation was no more trouble for me than any that involve several components.

2.”Great concept, but nowhere near ready for Prime Time” by johnk5k

Pros: A simple network interface for audio/video is exaclty what we need

Cons: VERY fickle installation, terrible customer support. MAJOR audio driver problem.

Summary: 2 Thumbs up for concept, but certainly not ready for prime time.
The current (March 2009) release version of the DPG-1200 is very fickle, installation can be nightmarish. It reconfigures your audio and video drivers so that in the final step of the installation wizard you can?t even find the finish button! Multiple hits on the ENTER key usually work, but if you panic and default out of the install it is Control Panel time because you are left with no audio, and an 800 x 600 display.

The most subtle but unacceptable problem with the DPG-2100 is the D-Link PC2TV audio driver which emphasizes your low frequency (bass) so severely that you?ll think that there is something very wrong with your stereo, this problem alone puts the DPG on the scrapheap until D-Link gets it figured out.

D-Link DAP-2590 PoE Access Point Description:

D-Link, an industry pioneer in wireless networking, introduces a solution for businesses seeking to deploy next generation 802.11n LANs. D-Link unveils its new AirPremier N Dual Band PoE Access Point (DAP-2590), designed specifically for business-class environments such as large or enterprise corporations to provide secure and manageable dual band wireless LAN options for network administrators.

Versatile Access Point

The DAP-2590 allows network administrators to deploy a highly manageable and extremely robust dual band wireless network. All three dual band antennas are detachable and can provide optimal wireless coverage in either 2.4GHz (802.11g and 802.11n) or 5GHz (802.11a and 802.11n) bands. Enclosed in a plenum-rated metal chassis, the DAP-2590 adheres to strict fire codes for placement in air passageways. For advanced installations, this new high-speed Access Point has integrated 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE) support, allowing installation of this device in areas where power outlets are not readily available.

Enhanced Performance

The DAP-2590 delivers reliable wireless performance with maximum wireless signal rates of up to 300Mbps** in either the 2.4GHz or 5GHz wireless band. This, coupled with support for Wi-Fi Multimedia™ (WMM) Quality of Service features, makes it an ideal access point for audio, video, and voice applications. Additionally, the DAP-2590 supports load balancing features to ensure maximum performance by limiting the maximum number of users per Access Point.

Multiple Operation Modes

To maximize total return on investment, the DAP-2590 can be configured to optimize network performance based on any one of its multiple operation modes: Access Point, Wireless Distribution System (WDS) with Access Point, WDS/Bridge (No AP Broadcasting) and Wireless Client. With WDS support, network administrators can set up multiple DAP-2590s throughout a facility and configure them to bridge with one another while also providing network access to individual clients. Also included are advanced features such as Load Balancing, which optimizes high network traffic volume, and redundancy for fail-safe wireless connectivity. Additionally, the DAP-2590 offers Spanning Tree Protocol support for greater efficiency and to avoid broadcast storms when used in WDS mode.

D-Link Boxee Box(DSM-380) Reviews. There’s a host of useful set-up stuff in the menus, including video test patterns to align the picture correctly to the screen and fine-tune the image quality. You can adjust overscan and aspect ratio (it even allows for cinemastyle 21:9 screens), and change your audio output options to suit either a specialist AV amp or a more basic setup. It’ll recognise and play just about any format of music, video and photo.

The remote seems brilliant: the double-sided design fits neatly in the palm and features a simple clicker-based cursor/controller on one side, plus a full QWERTY keypad on the other. In practice, there are moments when you’ll be juggling between the two control interfaces – but even so, this is way better than the Apple TV’s.

Boxee DSM-380 works like a content aggregator, bringing together the best free web content into one platform. You get plenty to choose from, but some online content suffers from patchy picture quality. There’s a proper web browser in here, complete with search engine (Bing), so you can also pull up web pages, maps and more.

Aside from YouTube offerings or your own downloads, Boxee also gives you free movies to watch, usually from independent studios and almost always ad-supported. Picture and sound quality can be ropey, though.

You might have hoped for a slick, app-style experience with online streaming sites and the like, but it doesn’t work as well as it should. Your content starts playing in a mini-window, exactly as it does on your laptop: you then have to cursor over the ‘full screen’ icon (not easy) to blow up the image.

With twin USB and SD inputs, the Boxee Box DSM-380 isn’t just a streamer: it’s also a local media player, able to replay directly from, say, a USB hard disk. The Boxee will browse your content, pull out the playable media and arrange your viewable files in an easily accessible folder structure, with thumbnails where relevant. It’ll do the same with any NAS drive on your network, too.

That’s great for convenience and also means the Box – plus a suitable hard disk full of content – will travel well: even if you can’t go online, you’ll still have plenty to play.

All this flexibility is great, but it clearly demands a powerful processor (Intel’s Atom CE4100), and in turn that means fan-cooling, unlike Apple TV. The Boxee Box DSM-380 doesn’t get hot in use – unlike the last-generation Apple design – but it’s always humming to itself, whatever you’re watching. That, it must be said, can get irritating.

The D-Link DI-704 is a Broadband Home and Small Business Gateway with Four Switched Fast Ethernet Ports. It allows multiple computers to share a cable or DSL Ethernet Internet connection. It provides security as a firewall between a Local Network and the Internet. The DI-704 is targeted at small businesses and home users.

Fast and secure

D-Link offers a generous list of standard features with its DI-704 router. The built-in, auto-sensing, 10/100mbps switch provides each node on the network with a dedicated Ethernet connection, which dramatically boosts performance for bandwidth-intensive applications and multiplayer gaming. Users concerned about network security will appreciate the built-in, NAT-based firewall. While NAT is not an enterprise-level firewall solution, it’s an effective way to hide the IP addresses of the computers on your local network; the router’s IP address is all that’s visible to the Internet.

Dig deeper

The DI-704 router also has something to offer networking gurus. Via the Web-based interface, an administrator can allow or deny access to specific machines and/or ports on any machine in the local network. For example, with the Virtual Server option, you can set up a Web server on your network to accept external requests without exposing the entire machine to the Internet. Telecommuting and virtual private networking (VPN) are also fully supported via the point-to-point tunneling protocol (PPTP) and IPsec pass-through technologies. The DI-704 router even offers a backup serial COM port, which lets you share an Internet connection via an external analog or ISDN modem.

User Reviews

Tom said:

Summary: my first one had persistent problems: it would stop working after about an hour so after hassling with it (it always started working again after about an hour) I called tech support and the guy immediately suggested it was a hardware defect and i exchanged it no questions asked (locally). the replacement has worked fine for 6+ months. easy enough to configure, inexpensive (if you don’t count my time to figure out the problem) and the 4 ports are more than what I need (network printer+mac+_pc). recommended if you buy it locally and can exchange it if it fails within 30 days or so.

Summary: Absolutely the best customer service, and at 3 am to boot. I read a lot of the comments posted here and agree with all the positive and NONE of the negative. The doc’s for the router could have been a little better. My problem was that I didn’t use the “clone MAC address” which a call to customer service revealed and was quickly taken care of. D-Links has absolutely the best CS I have ever called. No questions about where I bought it or was it registered, just good down to earth help. I will be putting D-Link products at the top of my list for new toys wanted!! I only wish I had used their NIC card and not the one from Belkin who has absolutely the worst warranty procedure I have ever encountered!

Summary: I got the router the other day and installed it this morning, OK, yesterday morning technically, around 20 hours ago. EVERYTHING works, printer sharing included and exactly as I imagined it – i.e. neither of my two machines needs to be on for the other to print to the printer. It was a snap to install and get the printer working. I did have a problem configuring the router and I called technical support. The problem turned out to be the fact that I had disabled the DHCP Service in my Windows 2000 on the machine that I chose to configure the router. Thus, it couldn’t pick up an IP from the router. I had no problems getting right through to tech support at the 877 number supplied (toll free), and you get a tech support person from the start = real cool. First guy wasn’t too smart, IMO. He had me try a mess of stuff and finally gave up and said he was going to escalate to a higher level technician and I’d get a call. Meantime I discovered that my other machine could run the configuration program and I set things up. Caveat! When you choose a password (if you DO choose a non-blank password to access router configuration), don’t use more than 9 characters. If you do, only the first 9 are stored and if you try putting in your PW with more than 9 characters, you are rejected. I was about to call them for that (couldn’t login) but I figured it out – put in the first 9. The next guy I got had me assign an IP instead of using DHCP for my problem machine. Then everything worked. While on hold I realized that my printer wasn’t on their website’s list of supported printers for the 704p. Bummer. Why? I asked. My HP4M is certainly designed to work with a print server – it’s primarily a network printer. The technician said I should look for the item in the FAQ on how to set up your printer on the 704p. This does NOT involve using the driver supplied on the CD. It’s just a Windows configuration thing. It works fine. The technician followed up our conversation by sending me a cool email with a number of very useful links. I’d say this is very good tech support. I reenabled the DHCP Service on my number one machine and reset the TCP/IP settings to get an automatically assigned IP and DHCP’s working on both machines now. The pleasantest surprise is that my VPN at work is functioning – no tweaks necessary. Now I’ve got to figure out how to get file sharing working on my LAN. Got a great deal on this, about $40 at buy.com after $20 rebate, and I hear it’s available for $40 – $20 MIR right now at Fry’s! What a deal!

D-Link DIR-625 User Reviews

1.User famousdavis1 said:

Pros: Easy setup, choices; improved performance

Cons: None to this point

Summary: Since my son started playing Xbox live I needed to upgrade my original 2-3 year old D-link (DI-524; basic g) router. After research, and reading all the horror stories/reviews about each manufacturer’s offering of routers, I decided I might as well stay with what has worked for me: D-link (also, I use D-link’s “SecureSpot” hardware security and I figured compatibility might be improved if I stayed with a D-link router.)

I chose D-link’s DIR-625 Platinum series (Rangebooster N) router. Carefully, I followed the instructions to a “t” — disconnecting my old router first, running the cable modem’s ethernet cable directly to a single PC, and installing the new D-link software — I was relieved (and pleasantly surprised) that it could not have been easier. Along the way, and as prompted, I downloaded the latest firmware. After successfully getting the “main” pc surfing the Internet, I added others just as easily and without installing the CD software on each pc (I either plugged in the ethernet cable to an open port on the router, or I entered my security key on the wireless laptops.)

The range is MUCH improved; I’m not sure about the speed (but I wasn’t having a problem before.) I think most others who are careful to follow clear, simple instructions they shouldn’t have a problem.

Pros: Amazing range. Simple setup. Comprehensive features

Cons: Not much faster then my old 54mps Netgear

Summary: Easy setup when I had my laptop connected directly to the router. When I then tried to get online with my desktop after setup couldnt get online. I called d-link and they suggested unistalling and reinstalling my usb wireless adaptor drivers and that did the trick no problems after that. works great. Amazing range. I have the Belkin N wireless usb adaptor and about 50 feet away and 3 walls i get 80-90% connectivity, or excellent for you XP users. Only bummer was it is not much faster then the 54mps netgear I had which is why I really upgraded.

Updated
The range and speed are very good using the N band. The theoretical for the router is 300mbs download speed, but the actual is 150 mbs. Then of course your limited a second time by the ISP. I have comcast, so the actual actual speed has averaged 16 mbs. This is a decent increase over what I had before with my 54 mbs Netgear which averaged about 8-10 mbs download speed.

3.User takemout said:

Pros: Great Range and Speed

Cons: No gigabit ports

Summary: This is the best router I have ever owned. It has great speed and range. I have been using the router for about a 2 weeks and it has not dropped connection. The firmware offers plenty options and customization. I have 4 bars everywhere in my home now. No dead spots. The was easy but I have a cable modem so the only thing I had to do was change the mac address and turn on the wireless security.

Pros: Stream radio, plug/play, ^ quality 420 to 1080, back-up all DVD’s to DIVX/XVID/MPEG4_SP( Read note on DivX), Buffer.

Cons: Fst fwd rwd slow (4 times normal), USB Capacity, Support_ all vendors R bad, need bookmark 4 video.

Summary: Reviewed 4 different Media Centers & Dlink 520 is the BEST.

Pros:
1) You can stream radio from many different internet sources & most are free.
2) System is pretty much plug/play. If you have media on your computer it will play on your TV through the 520.
3) I back-up all my DVD’s into DIVX format and 520 can read this format. However you must rename extension from .divx to .avi.
4) 520 increases the quality. I have a HD TV and with an HDMI cable quality is better then normal DVD even though with DivX a movie is compressed from >5GB to <700MB.
5) You can set up different media centers on different computers. As a result your entire family can log their media onto the 520.
6) Buffer ? Evidently some buffer is present. I rebooted my computer during a movie (accidentally) and the movie continued to play for over 3 minutes. Once it stopped it picked back up where it left off once computer was restored.

Pros: Stream music, photos, video from any UPnP AV compatible media server, stream online radio from radio@AOL, live365.com, direct USB thumb drive support, stream Windows Media DRM protected content.

Cons: Photo thumbnail support is horrible, UI can be improved, no support for bread crumb, no music album art, video forward/rewind functionality can be improved.

Summary: If you are in the market for Media Receiver/Hub then you may end up buying this. Direct connection to the USB drive open up lot of option for many users.

D-Link DSM-520 Media Receiver (D-link call it MediaLounge) is one the best among the available media receiver in the market. Not only it’s much better than it’s predecessor DSM-320, but with ton’s of additional features it’s affordable too. Having USB thumb drive support in the front gives option to the user to play video files directly from the external hard drive.

It works great with Windows Media Connect and TwonkyVision media server. Besides all kind of video support, DivX support was surprise for me.
